My One Shot Deals at Dandelion

2 07 2009

Tonight will be the grand opening of Dandelion’s art selections for this month, and in addition to the collection of “Bad Art” from the likes of Brian Phillips, Hannah Miller, Brian Feldman and Jessica Earley and others, and the paintings of Sandra Monday, my photography will be shown in one of the little rooms in the back.

Much of the work has been on exhibit before at Pound Gallery, but there are three new additions in colour which will be showcased alongside the larger black and white pieces.

The official opening will be from 8 pm until 10 pm this evening, and I will be there, likely mucking about and drinking iced tea, so if you’d like to stop by and say hello, please do so.  If you are on Facebook, there is a Facebook event page with more information.  Live music from Robert Johnson will also be enjoyed.

Get GEISAI

4 12 2008

This Friday, Hao and I will be going to Miami to check out GEISAI Miami, an art exhibition of contemporary work from artists near and far.  Per the website:

Organized by the artist-led art enterprise Kaikai Kiki, GEISAI presents a new art-collecting concept, allowing artists to exhibit their own work directly, without a commercial gallery, to an audience of collectors, curators and art enthusiasts.

Fun, yeah?  But if you want local arty-type fun here in Orlando this weekend…

December at Pound

Yes, that’s my name.  And despite being the queen of procrastination, I expect to have five photographs on display alongside the rest of the group.  Hao and I are going to try and make it back from Miami in time to go to the show on Saturday.  If we happen not to make it, for whatever reason, there’s always Third Thursday.

Sarah Bon’s Photography, and my moment as Das Modell

9 07 2008

My friend and local uber-talent Sarah Bon will be having an art opening on Friday, the 18th of July, at AKA Lounge.  The event is hosted by local music maven DJ Smilin’ Dan, who has dubbed it “Substance 2,” which leads me to expect at least a couple of New Order tracks to be played during the night.

Sarah took some photos of me at work at Stardust, making blueberry scones (as I was burning banana cupcakes in the oven), and she also grabbed me and a handful of her other friends to be used as models for her more portrait-based photography.  I made the joke that all of us would have some kick-ass photos for Last.fm, Facebook, Goodreads and other social sites soon.  I haven’t seen any of the photographs, although I hear my friend Melanie got a sneak peek at some (cheater), so I will be just as surprised as anyone else as to how they turned out.  I’m extra curious as to how the baking ones turned out, as I bought a whole new smock-like apron for the event.  Truly, it was just an excuse for me to get another apron.  I love aprons.

The flyer features one of Sarah’s friends I don’t know too well, but I do remember her being pretty cool when I met her at Sarah and Robert’s place a couple Sundays ago, along with two sisters, and the three of them seemed nice.  The photo looks very rock n’ roll with the eyeliner and the screenprinted gun shirt.

So, if you’ve got seven bucks in your pocket, wallet, sock or brassiere, come down to AKA Lounge on Pine Street downtown and have a gander at some photography, check out some live music, have some beer or other bevvies, and hang out.  I’m not familiar with the bands who will be performing, but I’m sure it will be good times, as good people–my friends–will be in attendance.

But I make no guarantees.

Art that’s a Piece of Cake

24 01 2008

There was a link to this article in my recent VenusZine newsletter, and I thought I’d share. It’s about Amy Stevens, an artist who takes photographs of rather over-the-top kitchy cakes she makes, some of which you can see in the little gallery in the article. The fabrics used as background for the cakes really take the whole piece up to a level of overload.

Sounds fun, doesn’t it? I thought so. Here’s the article from VenusZine: Avant garde confectioneries. You can see more of Stevens’ work on her webste, amystevensart.com, which isn’t just limited to her cake photos.
